Identity and Becoming. Giovanni Gentile: from Thought to Sentiment
The present essay goes critically through the whole path of Gentile’s thought in the light of the problematic relation between Identity and Becoming. After showing the extraneousness of Gentile to Hegel’s project of making reason the negative power immanent to intellect (The Reform of the Hegelian Dialectics), and the consequent failure of the attempt to distinguish the logic of the abstract from the logic of the concrete (System of Logic as Theory of Knowing), Vitiello lingers on the change of Gentile’s thought represented by the Philosophy of Art. In this work, in which Gentile recalls themes formerly present in a juvenile essay on the Absolute Forms of the Spirit, Identity is no longer “placed” by the Becoming, but it is rather its “requirement”, which, getting constantly out of the Becoming, prevents that it encloses in itself, in its own non becoming auto-identity.
