The corpus of the Syro-Hittite seals with hieroglyphic inscriptions impressed on the cuneiform tablets from tell Meskene, the ancient city of Emar, on the Middle Euphrates, represents a primary source to study: the dissemination of the hieroglyphic writing system in Hittitised Syria; the mechanisms of adaptation employed to render the Semitic names of the owners of the seals; and, more generally, the palaeography of the writing system. Even though a complete edition of this corpus is still lacking, several data on the hieroglyphic seals of Emar and the information they contain can be found in the literature. This paper aims at providing a survey of the main studies on this material and its implications for the reconstruction of several aspects of the Hittite rule in Syria during the 13th century B.C.
