The essay proposes to identify – through some passages of their philosophy – a common fil rouge between Fichte and Ricœur in the idea of a “sentimental” source – found for example in Ricœur’s resources of goodness and in Fichte’s concept of Liebe – thanks to which we can understand the deep meaning of an “ontological effort”. The starting point will be the idea of Ricœur about an “affective tonality”, an original feeling of “spiritual joy”, presupposed to the reflection and common in all subjects, that is able to tie the existence of the self to the Intersubjectivity. This question could constitute a point in common with Fichte: we can interpret moral sentiment as an affection that the moral law produces in the “sentimentality” of the subject. In this way, the subject appears constitutively predisposed to perceive, through reflection, the unconditioned and relational invitation of the other to self-knowledge and self-determination.
