This essay offers an analysis of the novel Auslöschung by Thomas Bernhard based on the concept of counter-direction. ‘Counter-direction’ is understood both poetically and poetologically. The concept means a movement of the characters against society and its cultural and historical-political heritage, an attempt to come to terms with the family’s involvement in National Socialism, and a way of writing against the traditional forms of the novel. The principle of the counter-direction is traced in four areas: in Bernhard’s idea of story destruction (Geschichtenzerstörung), in the writing of the novel embedded in Bernhard’s OEuvre, in the depiction of a fundamental political topography, and finally in the concept of the Geistesmensch. Thus, an integrative reading of the novel can be derived from the concept and principle of the counter-direction.
