Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the ‘public Bernhard’. By this expression we have to intend the topics of the interviews held by Thomas Bernhard during his life, with particular attention to the ones with Krista Fleischmann and with Peter Hamm. It is very interesting to try to understand Thomas Bernhard’s opinions, and to compare them with those of his literary figures. In Bernhard’s typical art of paradox, the writer reveals and conceals his relationships with the characters in his novels. Just on the occasions when it could be easier to know the real face of Bernhard, the impossibility of such a meeting is disclosed.
